Over thirty years ago I asked the driver of one of the new fleet of recycling trucks how much the multicompartmented truck cost. He said that the body was about $250,000 plus the truck chassis and can.
I asked him if the recycling program was able to sell the recyclables for a profit. He gave a laugh and said that they just dumped it all in the landfill just like the regular trash compactor trucks! The program would have to attain over 95% compliance – each household separating the recyclables into the three bins – before the city would even begin to actually implement a recycling program!
When I went to a dump facility in another city with a load of trash, I saw the “recycling” trucks coming in and dumping the “recyclables” in the same bin with the regular trash. No sorting, no separating.
