CNN’s Keilar rips Democrats for ignoring their own rules

CNN’s Brianna Keilar, who has frequently blasted Republicans for what she deemed their hypocrisy on various issues, did an about-face Wednesday blasting elected Democratic officials who have been caught flouting the very Covid guidelines they expect the public to follow.

Keilar began by reporting that multiple Democratic leaders have been apologizing or reversing course after numerous instances of “do as I say, but not as I do” behavior when it comes to following Covid guidelines.

“They have been caught, not following their own coronavirus guidelines,” Keilar said, calling out San Francisco Mayor London Breed, who attended a birthday party at the swanky Napa Valley restaurant The French Laundry; California Gov. Gavin Newsom who attended a birthday party the day before, at the same restaurant; Los Angeles county supervisor Sheila Kuehl, who voted to close outdoor dining last week but dined out before the restrictions went into effect; and San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo for violating his own Thanksgiving guidelines by attending a gathering with his elderly parents that included guests from five different households, also in violation of California’s guidelines.

In addition to the California hypocrites, Keilar called out Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, who told residents to skip Thanksgiving travel and large gatherings and then promptly flew to Mississippi to spend the holiday with his wife and daughter, noting that even though he apologized saying the decision was “born of my heart and not my head” and that he “did the exact opposite of what he told everyone else to do,” and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who told New Yorkers to limit gatherings and let it be known that he was planning to get together with his mother and daughters.  Cuomo reversed course after a public outcry.

“The past few weeks brought into relief a pattern of leaders failing to lead by example,” Keilar said. “Asking Americans to make sacrifices that they themselves are unwilling to make. And appearing sorry only when they’re caught.”

“Trust is built slowly but it evaporates faster than reservations at a fancy restaurant. A lot of these leaders, they are looking across the aisle to blame Republicans who aren’t taking mask-wearing seriously. But maybe it’s time they also look in the mirror and ask themselves if that amuse-bouche was really worth it.”

These Democrats thought they were above the guidelines that they helped enact, and when they were caught, they tried to excuse away their behavior.
